The American HIVE: These photos show how people create 'highly interactive virtual environments' by moving their laptops around their habitats. To find out why they do this, check out our blog on Hiving.

Cyber Census 2012

Americans want to return to a more balanced use of technology and some are using their 'black boxes' strategically to return to center.

What is Cyber Census?

Study Background: On-Site has been conducting the first ever longitudinal ethnographic study of American Cyber Lives since 2004. We have a panel of 200 Americans that have been participating and we add new participants each year. In 2012, our team will embed themselves into American life and take a dive deep to understand how all aspects of technology are influencing lives, our culture and the very nature of how people experience themselves on this planet.

This year, we will start in California and cover our Southern route, ending up in New York for mid-project updates. We will then continue on our Northern route which will bring us full circle back to California. We will touch base with 100 of our study participants in 2012.

Cyber Census 2012: This year is yet again a pivotal year for the Cyber Census study. Many of our study participants are continuing to experience economic hardship. The very nature of the American Dream (a key focus of our study) is being redefined differently by each cohort. Our American culture is under assault from many directions and the middle class seems to be falling behind. At this point in our longitudinal study, we are able to learn from the change people have gone through for years. The result: We are able to bring ethnographic perspective about technology and its impact on American lives to our clients/sponsors in a way that no other ethnographic company can.
